Mexico vs Chile
International Friendlies
Date: Wednesday, 17 October 2018
Kick-Off at 02:45 UK / 03:45 CET
Venue: Estadio La Corregidora (Santiago de Queretaro).
Wednesday’s international friendly action sees Mexico doing battle with Chile in Santiago de QuerĂ©taro. The hosts will be itching for revenge after suffering an embarrassing 7-0 defeat to the visitors in the 2016 Copa America.
That day in California was one of the darkest days in Mexican footballing history and with the scars still relatively fresh and many of today’s squad having played in the fixture, caretaker boss Ricardo Ferretti certainly won’t have much work to do as regards getting his troops up for the game.
Ferretti has struggled overall since coming into the dugout since the World Cup, losing to both Uruguay and USA in the last international break, but he picked up his first win on Friday with a 3-2 triumph over Costa Rica. Said win was certainly a much needed one for El Tri, putting an end to their post-World Cup hangover as well as a losing streak of 4 straight matches and recording another one is the only target on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Chilean side that embarrassed Mexico and went on to lift the Copa America for the second time running is now a distant memory, with La Roja now in a desperate state, with most of their stars aging and having failed to qualify for the last World Cup.
Getting preparations right going into next year’s Copa America in Brazil is the target but Reinaldo Rueda hasn’t settled into the job well since being appointed and Chile have now won just 1 of their last 6 matches overall, despite playing no real powerhouses. Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of rivals Peru has morale low in the camp coming into this trip and more then displayed the ongoing issues present on the pitch.
Ultimately, we can only see one result here and that’s a home win. Unlike in most friendly clashes, this should be a heated match and we’re anticipating a highly motivated Mexican showing in front of a charged crowd.
With Chile in desperate shape, Mexico arriving off the back of a morale boosting win and taking into account the history surrounding the match, backing a Mexico win looks a great way to play and is exactly where our money is going. Mexico have won their last 4 matches contested on Mexican soil and have also won 3 of their last 4 friendlies against South American opposition and we fancy them to extend both sequences with a 2-0 margin of victory.
Mexico vs Chile: Head-to-head
Mexico lead the head to head tie by three wins coming into their 16th encounter against La Roja.
However, their fans can definitely still remember a disastrous 0-7 defeat they suffered to Chile at the 2016 Copa America.
Fewer than two goals were scored in four of last seven head to head outings between the two teams.
Mexico vs. Chile prediction
Mexico has more quality but there are some veterans for Chile that want to show they still have it like Fabian Orellana. Expect few goals but for Mexico to squeak out a victory. Mexico 2, Chile 1.
